This was one of the first paintings that pushed me to really lean into my love of color, detail, and saturation, and it changed how I paint.
At the time I was most comfortable with quick 5×7 afternoon sessions. Sunset Pansy was a deliberate stretch: bigger, slower, more intentional. I remember feeling genuinely intimidated by the blank paper. What came out of it was a painting that still stops me in my tracks.
The colors take me somewhere specific… easy summer nights in Colorado, watching the sky go peach and pink over the Rockies, the sun still warm on your skin while you wait for the evening to unfold. This pansy holds all of that.
Sunset Pansy was published in Vogue UK and was inspired by a photo from @threebrothersblooms on Instagram, a fantastic pansy farmer I've had the pleasure of building a real relationship with through my work.
