The anchor of my Farmers Market Series.
When I first saw this stem-intact artichoke I was immediately taken by it — the rough, organic texture of the bracts, the sage greens layered against deep purple, and then the surprise of finding it flowering in the most beautiful lilac. I felt like I had no choice but to paint it.
Of all the pieces in this series, the artichoke pushed me furthest into texture and detail. There's nothing delicate about an artichoke, and I didn't want to paint it that way. The roughness is the whole point.
