In September 2025, my husband and I traveled to Holland to celebrate his mother's birthday. She took me to a working windmill, Windmill de Kat in Zaanse Schans, the most quaint and beautiful Dutch town still honoring its original architecture. Standing since 1781, this particular windmill has been grinding pigments for paints since its refurbishment in 1960, and as an artist, I felt deeply connected to the entire process.
While exploring the mill these beautiful rainbow of pigments kept safe behind weathered wood and dusty glass stopped me in my tracks, I spent what felt like forever trying to capture the perfect reference photo, already feeling called to paint it, even though I had no idea how I'd begin to tackle something with that level of detail.
It wasn't until January 2026 that I finally felt ready. For months, I painted each jar as if it were its own little masterpiece, pouring love into each one. This painting challenged me in ways I never could have predicted. It changed me as an artist.
And then it connected me with more people than I ever could have expected. I'm so grateful it has spoken to so many of you. I hope this print lives proudly in your space.
